I am near to going home after a week with family. It has been fun but I am ready to go home. Sleep in my own bed, sit in my own chair, and kick my own cat.

Let us be clear… I love seeing my family but I hate coming back to where I grew up. Too many memories.

In a handful of hours I will be back in my own home, and thrilled to be there.

But I enjoy seeing my dad. He and I got on the topic of adults that we ran across in our young lives that took an interest in us but we never understood why until years later, or may not have ever done so.

He mentioned one teacher who wrote in his book “‘Can’t’ never did anything.”

It is an unusual thing to say in a kid’s autograph book and surely had a reason.

I told him that I had a teacher give me “The Count of Monte Cristo”. He remembered her well.

Out of all the kids she had in her classes she wasn’t known for handing out books not on the reading list and saying things such as “I think you will really identify with the main character.”

And I still wonder what made her do that. I can make all sorts of guesses but what did she know or think she knew about me and my life?

If you have had that happen, I would love to hear about it, and why you think it happened.

Freaky Friday.

This will be a post in parts.

Lemurita and I are in Oregon visiting my dad. It is an awesome trip and I am loving hanging out with her. It is really nice to spend time with her without sibling rivalry. It is the first time I have ever done so and it is the first time Cruel Wife and HackerBoy have done the same.

Anyhow, she stayed with her aunt and uncle last night and I drove out to their house today. She had fun with her cousins SaladGirl and GameBoy.

My brother-in-law said today “You like Halloween, right?”

You know how I love Halloween.

He then said “Want to see the costume I am working on?”

So he showed me his “Babyface” costume.

This is NSFC (not safe for children)…

Is that not creepy? I loved it.

He wants to start a “Rude Roadhouse Bar and Grill – Where you will eat your damn vegetables” and he wants me to cook there. We have established that the waitresses must chew on cigar stubs and have naughty tattoos. Feel free to chime in with your suggestions.

Next is a goat at my sister’s house/farm/menagerie. I was introduced to her and gave her some goat-scritches. Then I gave her a goat-massage of her goat-shoulders (no, get your heads out of the gutters, people). Then we moved on to see other farm critters. I said to my sister, The Mad Felter, “One thing I know is goats.”

“How do you know goats?”

“Neighbors three houses down from dad’s place had them. I sure love getting out in the country again. If the zombie apocalypse happens I will get the family, we’ll fight our way across the country and come live with you, ok? We work hard and will bring our own zombie-killin’ tools.”

“Cool!”

Just then I got knocked to the side gently by the goat, who demanded more shoulder massages.

Childrearing can be fun.

The kids are of an age to teach about guns.   At their age I was already shooting several boxes of .22’s daily.  Here they cannot do that.

So I got out various weapons and showed them the proper way to point them, when to consider them loaded (all the time), showed them how any one of them could easily kill a person.

Moved on to the “sound” portion.  I racked the Mossberg 500 – you know that formidable sound it makes.  I said “Kids when you hear that sound what do you do?”

“Run away” was one answer.  Another was “Hide in such-and-such location”.  I told them “No, what you do when you hear that sound is hit the floor.   “Let’s see how fast you can hit the floor when I rack this gun”

And so we made a game out of a very serious thing, which is get the kids out of the equation.   “How long do you stay there?”    “Until you say we can get up.”    They were slamming themselves into the floor to see who could be quickest.

It was a great start.    And I made it clear to them that if I ever have to choose between their safety and the safety of an intruder in our home we will not hesitate to send the intruder to his maker in the most expedient way possible.  I disabused them of the silly notion of “aiming for the leg” that so many liberals would love – if you mean to aim a gun at someone you should only have done so thinking that you or yours were in terrible danger, and if your situation is that extreme then the idea of only trying to wound someone is ludicrous.

Given the latest round of testing done to look at Lemurita and where she falls on the ASD continuum, they reversed her diagnosis to a lesser but still real diagnosis and then said “She tests just under 140 on her IQ.  Get her into robotics or something.”   Well, I KNOW she’s bright… why did y’all think I have been throwing latin and classics and music at her all this time?

She and I are so alike that the worst disservice we could give her is to not give her free reign to run as far as she can go in any field of learning.  With the right mentor, vast swathes of my childhood would have been infinitely more interesting.

So last night Lemurita and I built a galvanic response circuit you can use as a VERY simplified lie-detector circuit if you have appropriate leads.  She swears she does not sweat when she lies so now we must prove the point one way or another.  I’ll also take the opportunity to teach her how to flip the emotional switch off and see if that makes a difference.   Doing scientific projects with Lemurita is fun – a vast huge amazing amount of fun.

Wait until Lemurita and I make thermite and put it on a remote ignition.  Oh this will be such fun.

A Little Rain Must Fall.

The news just as I got up this morning wasn’t good.  Cruel Wife entered the hallway and said “Mom is dead.”

I shook my head and said “What?”

“Mom died last night”, she said, and lost it.

Apparently her mother had taken her regular scalding-hot we-can-peel-peaches-and-tomatoes-in-this-water bath and didn’t get out.  About all we can figure is that her heart may have given out.

And so, using blog nicknames as usual, here’s a nod of respect to Bat-Crap Crazy Food Nazi (BCCFN).  She drove me nuts while here at our house and about killed me with her preaching about the evils of salt while she was mentally measuring the amount I used with every shake, but it cannot be denied that she was at her core a kind and caring person.  I’m pretty darned sure that she didn’t suffer and that where BCCFN is right now is a wonderful place.

CW is doing well enough – it comes and goes in waves and as long as she keeps moving and focused on the details of small things she’s holding up.  I will keep the meals coming, the kitchen clean, and whatever is needed to keep things “normal” and let her and the kids deal with things as they wash over them.

Not until they’ve destroyed society…

Come on, now.  Grope, publicly demean, humiliate, inconvenience… US Customs can do whatever they want, really, because there’s no real oversight, but taking a man’s Vegemite

For Pete’s sake… really?

I like Marmite, no one in my family likes it, and I’m told it is similar (and I’m sure I’ll get nastygrams from outraged Australians) – so I do have some sympathy for the man.  Thank goodness he had diplomatic immunity.

Update:  Saw the link to this article on Drudge, and I have to comment on it.  On TheHill.com:

Unhappy members of the Congressional Black Caucus “probably would be marching on the White House” if Obama were not president, according to CBC Chairman Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.).

If [former President] Bill Clinton had been in the White House and had failed to address this problem, we probably would be marching on the White House,” Cleaver told “The Miami Herald” in comments published Sunday. “There is a less-volatile reaction in the CBC because nobody wants to do anything that would empower the people who hate the president.

So, in other words:   It’s not that you are racist, it’s just your understandable and completely defensible response because the white man is purely racist.

Do I have that about right?

Don’t buy it.  You think Obama is a POS, but really, you hate whitey more.  Never comes down to recognizing the fact that “the white guy is always the bad guy” unless the bad guy is really the black guy but that is OK because the white guy is by definition bad.  Whatever happened to marching on Obama because he’s just totally the wrong effin’ guy to have in power, that it’s the right thing to do, regardless of whether it empowers someone?

Well, I guess it is at least something that Cleaver had the balls to say anything at all.

Ok, get your geek-on here… I’ve been interested in HDRI, light transport, tone-mapping for years now, but check this out.

Stanford Light Field Camera.

In the comments section though – pet peeve warning – guy writes trash, another guy writes in and says “He’s right – I’m a scientist” as if that proves a damn thing.  What are you a scientist of, sport?  Read any papers about light fields lately?  Know an author of any papers right off the top of your head?

Peevish today.  Don’t mind me.

I trolled Fark today and ran across this… a family tree without branches.  (Language NSFW)

Okay

Police said a 1999 Ferrari smashed through a power pole and crashed onto the beach some 30 feet below the road. The car was severed in two.

Yeah, about that:

Authorities say a high rate of speed likely was a factor in the crash. The accident was under investigation.

How much education does it take to be able to figure these tough ones out?

****

Ashes to ashes, and goo to …. ew.  Liquefaction of deceased loved ones will probably never really catch on.
