Update:
Supposedly it was an old-style POS half-ringer, which I witnessed the guy take out of the telephone box on the house. While it did help with our DSL not crapping out every time the phone rang and we temporarily had awesome service (which, alas, I did not take real advantage of), we went back to crap yesterday afternoon and evening.
Our modem is still on it’s way to being toast, I’m afraid.

The state of my ISP (AT&T) and an Old DSL Modem (sort of like the Old Gods only much more evil). We’ve been waiting TEN DAYS for them to get off their asses and fix our lines. The noise is like listening to a 747 through someone’s cellphone. Our modem can’t seem to hold on to it’s passwords and kicks out regularly.
Can’t hardly stay on long enough to grab e:mail, certainly can’t transfer a file bigger than 100K without loss of signal.
That this is even going through (hope) is a small miracle.
So that’s why I’m out of touch. Otherwise you’d have seen some Frankenboy knee pics by now.
Hang in there. We’re still here, I think.
Yep, I’m here, anyway 🙂 And I’m very patient, too!
Oh good, the lights to the universe don’t go out when the internet door closes…
Well, part of it was a half-ringer that was ancient and a POS.
Turns out that our modem is still a POS, too.
Developing…
Sounds like Century Link. I put in an order with them a week and a half ago to upgrade my DSL from 1.5 Mbps to 6 Mbps, was supposed to get it a week ago today and naturally it didn’t happen. I’ve spent hours on the phone with “tech support” (a waste, even had one tech tell me that a megabyte is the same thing as a megabit and one tell me it was the line from my NID to my router, even though it’s CAT 5 installed less than a year ago) and as of right now I’m enjoying a whopping 1.2 Mbps. To top it off the modem/router they provided as a replacement for the original modem/router less than a year ago went out over the weekend. I might get the new one by next week. Although my internet hasn’t gone completely out yet, I feel your pain when it comes to dealing with ISPs.
da_truth36 – a rep tried to tell you 1Mb was the same as 1MB? I’d have been so insulted I’d have done a Quack Attack all over that tech’s ass.
I’ve got a window here and I was actually able to download my e:mail. Woohoo! Amazing how the simple things can delight you in the right context.
