I got to see my first movie in a theater where I understood it all instead of 10-30% for the first time in my life.

CW and I went to see Star Trek before it left the theaters.  Kids were with Grandpa.  We got there and they had personal captioning devices that you could plug into your cup holder and watch honest-to-God captions that were readable, well synced, complete sentences – everything.  It seems like a simple thing to those that can hear but to me it was like being a little kid and given a Red Ryder BB gun.   It was that cool.

Halfway through, a migraine hit, and I could not leave for some Imitrex.  By the end of the movie I was a turnip with no nervous system other than a set of nerves all cranked to 11.  Today was rough but now I have migraine hangover.  It was bad today.  I was pretty close to banging my head on the doorframe and was nauseous.  Went to work anyway, had CW drive me to and from.  I may be able to sort of work like that but driving like that puts innocent people at risk and I won’t do it.

But seeing Benedict Cumberbatch play his part in it as he did, after playing Sherlock as well as he did… he ranks up with Bryan Cranston in my book.

The movie was so-so.  Predictable.  Still fun even as it slowly killed me.

I definitely want to see more movies like that.  Where I have captions to enjoy them.

DailyMail.co.UK seems to have more on the ball than newspapers in the US.

Pill you take can remember your passwords.  Tablets can transmit personal details to devices as they pass through your body.  Then what?  The future will be full of scat salvagers who reclaim important poo for $5 a pound.

I have heard of people rooting through my shit but this seems… excessive.

Higher levels of air pollution reduced the frequency of North Atlantic hurricanes and other tropical storms for most of the 20th century, a study said Sunday.   –  Researchers from the UK Met Office created weather simulations covering the period 1860 to 2050

Well, when things haven’t been warming up as per the dire predictions it was said to be an unexpected slowdown but the situation is just as dire.

When cold weather hit during the massive lurch to global warming that wasn’t really, it was explained that pockets of intense cold and snow are predicted by runaway AGW.

When hurricanes and tornadoes were thought to be getting stronger it was considered as being caused by AGW.

Now the reduced frequency is predicted to be signs of higher levels of air pollution.

So whether it is drought, flooding, hurricanes or no, bad hurricanes or lesser hurricanes, warmer or no, colder winters or no…. someone somewhere can run a model that shows that it is due to AGW.

And if we engaged in zero carbon footprint – all of us – killed off 90% of the humans on earth, killed off all our cows, buried our vehicles, lived in caves, and ate nothing but algae engineered to be the new green tofu.

Why, we could bring back the Garden of Eden Creation Kit (GECK) and it would work flawlessly.

Glaciers be damned, we’ve got more important things going on today.

Note the involvement of Lemurita in this endeavor.

Time for a reality check.

Contrary to ideas about the disappearance of Pastoruri, engineer Benjamin Morales Arnao, local glaciologist, to state testing a method to reverse the thaw, though many may consider unorthodox, has already received its first positive results: Cover the ice with a layer of sawdust 15 cm thick. The experiment was carried out in the mounts Chaupijanca and Pastoruri. The results are clear: the fields look like a plateau covered in snow. Thus, the first glacier managed to keep four meters of ice and in the second five. “This material acts as an insulator. Contains cellulose and, thus, we managed to decrease the melting glacier. Although this method has worked well, we’ll be testing other alternatives”, refers Morales..  (Yes, wikipedia but reported on NPR today)

Let’s assume for the sake of a silly argument that SOYLENT GREEN is absolutely and utterly full of sh*t (and he is, by his own admission, just not about AGW and many other things †), and we’ll assume that AGW is “real”.

Note:  Hilariously, SOYLENT GREEN’s posting today is titled “Do The Math”…

Some numbers based on Arnao’s experiment.  Let’s propose that we are going to save that glacier (Pastoruri Glacier) using his method – cover a glacier with 150mm of sawdust.

AG (area Pastoruri glacier) = 3.1 km^2 = 3,100,000 m^2

DC (depth of chips) = 0.15m depth

VC (volume chips) = 465,000 m^3 = 608,197 yds (cubic)

Dens (oak ‡) = 600 lbs/yd

MC (mass of chips) = 364,918,224 lbs

MOT (mass of one oak tree) = 20,000 lbs

SNOTTMD (small number of oak trees that must die) = 18,245 oak trees for 3.1 km^2

(breathes, continues)

AGW (oopsie, area top 10 glaciers in the world) = 13,745,426 km^2

At 18,245 oaks per 3.1 km^2 it’s 5,885 dead oaks per km^2…

LNOOTTSTPG (large number of oak trees to save the planet’s glaciers) = 81,255,670,649 oak trees

Now, just prove to me that these numbers are any less silly than the bullsh*t numbers SOYLENT GREEN and others are fighting daily that have come out of Hansen, Gore, Briffa, Jones, etc.  Most of the numbers were researched educated guesses based on assumptions pulled out of my ass.  Just like science.

I’m pointing out what kind of fruitbats conduct experiments covering glaciers with sawdust.

So next time some idiot spouts off about saving the glaciers remind them that a fellow fruitbat suggested killing 81 billion trees to accomplish that mission.

SOYLENT GREEN is most definitely not full of shit unless he wants to be

Oak was used because there are a lot of numbers on it and denser trees make for more believable numbers than if we used pine trees

A blogger I have come to respect, The Curtal Friar, got us into a pickle by coming up with a pretty darned good composite offensive name for a video game that should be made (and would be if I were king) along the lines of Tea Party Zombies Must Die (but in stark contrast to the philosophy implied by TPZMD).

You want to hear what he helped spawn?  Of course you do!  And if you can come up with something – some niggling little tweak- that makes the title of the fictitious game sizzle more than it already does then you will be a winner and your name will be read by literal tens of people.

Twilight Of The Undocumented Cheesing Gay Afro-Chinese Chainsaw-Wielding Diaper-Wearing Midget-Mafia-Zombie-Mime Stuttering Tea Party Apocalypse Priests From Tijuana

That gives me shivers right up to the point where my brain swells and shuts down.  No, I’m sure the title doesn’t make complete sense, but I’m not one to judge after looking at it and having so many brain-swellings today.

Update:  Speaking of “Twilight” – the source of the inspiration for the beginning of the above title – there really is too much importance put on that shite.  How does nature say “Lock her up forever and lose the damn keyThis is how.

In the “We’ve Got New Stoopid Technology” category…

The fuel cell inside PowerTrekk is a completely passive system. Without fans or pumps, the fuel cell silently converts hydrogen into electricity via its Proton Exchange Membrane.

The chemistry process is safe, controllable and eco-friendly, and the only bi-product from the fuel cell is a little water vapor. To operate, hydrogen must be supplied to the fuel cell, and the fuel cell must be exposed to the open air.

The fuel cell charger is electronic waste and will be part of an industry program for recycling. The fuel pack is part of an industry program for reusing its materials and is made of coated can materials which prevent corrosion and leakage of chemicals.

Oooh, only a little water vapor!  Wow!  And, uh… where are you getting the hydrogen?  Oh, only a little water vapor and coal-originated carbon dioxide from the process to break down water into oxygen and hydrogen.  Oh, and only a little water vapor, carbon dioxide, and mercury from the coal burning process.

Wait.  You say there are multiple sources of hydrogen?  Really?

Since the hydrogen fuel can be supplied from several alternative sources, the system is “flexifuel”.

Ok.  Name them.  Tell me what they are.

Still waiting.

Ok, I read through their site to the point where I got really bored and I still get hung up on this part:

The chemistry process is safe and eco-friendly, and the only by-product from the fuel cell is a little water vapor.

I’m sure that hydrogen-to-electrons is safe and friendly.  I totally buy that.  Really, I do.   But I don’t believe that you’re getting a free lunch in getting that hydrogen, and I don’t believe that if you close the loop and account for where all that golden-chewy-nougaty-goodness absolutely pure energy came from, that all you spin off is a little water vapor.

But fine… if what we’re really talking about is a cool portable power source, like batteries, then that is totally cool, and in fact they are mega-super-cool.  I even think they’re pretty damned neat.  But please don’t spin it to make it sound like you are cheap-and-clean zero-point-energy-mavericks and the eco-paladins of the world.

I’m not saying the power packs are comparable to the CFL in any way/shape/form.  But the simple “don’t think so hard, trust us, apples and chihuahuas can be compared one-to-one” kind of ridiculousness is similar.  You don’t get to say “Hey, CFL’s are great because they use less wattage” when the total KWH from cradle to grave is much worse.  How we all got screwed by CFL’s.

Lighting expert Lucy Martin told the Daily Express, which is crusading for a referendum to pull Britain out of the EU: “The carbon footprint of manufacturing, distribution and disposal of a compact fluorescent bulb is far greater than the energy usage of a standard bulb.”

Really?  You don’t say…

Keeping in mind that every technology is spun and nothing is free, this is kind of cool – transparent solar panels.

If we’re going to keep coming back to energy, let’s go over to SOYLENT GREEN’s and look at the state of retrograde warming, shall we?   (pretty sure it was safe for work as of ten minutes ago)

Deus Ex update:  If it were not for the boss fights it would be the best FPS, finally knocking the original Deus Ex out of the #1 spot after more than a decade.  But it has them so it didn’t.  Bummage.

C. Monster over at Soylent approached me a few days ago and said “Lemur King, you’re an ass and I want nothing to do with you.”

No, he didn’t say that.  He might have thought it but even as blunt as he can be, he did not utter those words.

He did, however, spew forth an idea.  One that mocks those who are still all a-tizzy about carbon credits, AGW, wring hands to excess, and worry about the extinction off all life as we know it.  He gets some of the best ideas… he’s like a twisted artistic muse.

Hey, if you extend the timeline out enough, the survival rate drops to zero.

I want to do Letherback Turtles next.  I’m haggling over the denomination with c.monster…

PROFANITY ALERT:

By the way, all eco-terrorist trolls – I happen to love sea turtles almost as much as dolphins so piss right off if you feel like having a shit-hemorrhage with indignation over the use of endangered animals on money thing.

Update: If you’re prayin’ folk, Haiti could sure use it.  That’s some serious hurt down there.  3M out of the country’s 9M people in need of aid, initial (sometimes wild) estimates of 100K dead, fires, collapsed schools (heartbreaking), and hospitals collapsed.  Bad bad bad.

On to moronitude. One test concept to throw out.  Some kind of banner would be a good goal, but…  not sure whether it should be self-mocking or a real slam on liberals of all stripes who think that if they say something enough times it will be true (think: Nothing will happen if we cap executive salaries at AIG and they’ll learn a hard lesson).

Oh, Hell.

Update:

Global Warming is all over the ground here and apparently it is really screwing things up for folks globally.  Except Polar Bears, apparently.

cbullitt thinks he is going to hell for this.

He’d better make space on the benches next to him.

The funeral for a 70-year-old retired priest and green campaigner who died after cycling through the snow to the World Climate Change Summit has been held.

It is not clear to me whether he died in his sleep as a result of the ride or whether he did the ride and later died of natural causes.

After reading more, he did arrive safely w/o medical fanfare, he just croaked while at a Global Warming Conference in the middle of a blizzard.  That’s all.

Really.

Well, I personally think a lot of Dems might be going to hell for THIS themselves.  Dem Ben Nelson just shines and outs himself to be the sack of shit that he truly is.

The memo, written by McMaster Chief of Staff Trey Walker, explains that Nelson told McMaster that the Medicaid deal had not been his idea, and that the same Medicaid exemption would be extended to other states.

Senator Nelson insisted that he had not asked for the Cornhusker Kickback to be placed in the U.S. Senate version of the health care bill to secure his vote. Senator Nelson told the attorney general that it was simply a ‘marker’ placed in the U.S. Senate version of the bill and assured the attorney general that it would be ‘fixed,’ says the memo.

The document goes on to say: “Senator Nelson said it would be ‘fixed’ by extending the Cornhusker Kickback (100% federal payment) on Medicaid to every state.”  Politico

Call off the dogs” isn’t “reaching out”, sorry.  It is either a plea for help or a threat.

For the reader’s convenience, here is a link to a summary of the ClimateGate revelations.

http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/12/01/lord-moncktons-summary-of-climategate-and-its-issues/

PDF document in great detail:

Not so fast.  It snowed in Texas this morning.  AGW is saved!  Because as Ex-Pres Clinton said:  Warming Causes Cooling.

As it begins to melt, if it melts faster, it could change the composition of the north Atlantic and interrupt the normal flow of currents, and ironically global warming could make some places colder.  – WJC

Don’t look for any admissions of being plain wrong or apologies for being twits, just expect leaders, politicians, and smug moonbat liberals to just fade away, slinking into the woodwork and shadows.

… want to make one more remark…

Obama’s science Czar, Holdren…

The adviser, John Holdren, said scientists generally are capable of defensiveness, bias and “misbehavior.” But he said the meaning of some of the statements in the emails isn’t clear, and that the significance of others has been exaggerated.

Human activity is “beyond any reasonable doubt” the primary cause of warming temperatures, Mr. Holdren said.   – source:  WSJ

I have to add one remark that the WSJ just can’t, in following up on Holdren’s remark.  Scientists like himself are also capable of being dead wrong and assholes.

Just ’cause you’re saying it is a non-issue, Holdren, doesn’t mean it will become one.

We sure know where the Obama camp lives – with Browner and Gibbs calling it a non-event as well.
